North West Infrastructure (formerly the North West Iron Ore Alliance) is a joint venture company which represents the interests of its three shareholder companies: Atlas Iron Limited; Brockman Resources Limited; and FerrAus Limited. The mission of North West Infrastructure is to facilitate the construction of a port facility capable of annually exporting 50 million tonnes of iron ore from the South-West Creek location at the Inner Harbour at Port Hedland, Western Australia. The WA State Government previously made this 50mtpa allocation to support the development plans of the emerging sector of Pilbara iron ore miners.

Considerable development work has been successfully undertaken to date, including the completion of a Pre-Feasibility Study in 2009 and extensive technical work towards a 10,000 page Definitive Engineering Study in 2010. A native title agreement has been successfully secured with traditional owner groups, and heritage surveys and geotechnical surveys conducted across the sites.

NWI formally submitted an environmental referral document for the proposed Multi-User Iron Export (Landside) Facility to the Office of the Environmental Protection Authority (OEPA) on the 5th of October 2011. The proposed Landside Facility includes the development of two berths within South West Creek to provide for the export capacity of 50 million tonnes per year of iron ore, along with supportive infrastructure incorporating stackers and loaders, conveyors, stockyard, rail car dumper and rail loop. The OEPA published its Report (#1419) and Recommendations on the Landside Facility on the 28th of November 2011. After a two week public consultation period, the Minister for the Environment will make an approval decision on the Proposal. NWI intends to seek separate environmental approvals for a rail connection and water supply for the Landside Facility.

North West Infrastructure has been active in the Port Hedland community, including direct support for voluntary community groups which provide valuable assistance for the socially disadvantaged. In addition, North West Infrastructure is a participant on the Executive Committee of the Port Hedland Industries Council (PHIC) which is working to minimise industrial impacts on the Port Hedland community and environment.
